Is there a minimum age for renting a vehicle with Rent-a-Car?

The minimum age is 25 and you must have held your license for a minimum of 12 months if you are renting from VWFS Rent-a-Car. Restrictions apply if you are over 75 years of age.

In order to hire any ID model you must have held your license for 24 months.

Can I add additional drivers?

Additional drivers must be expressly identified on the Rental Agreement. All persons wishing to drive must provide their license and be validated with our insurance to ensure they can be covered and sign the rental agreement on pick up.

What documents are required if I'm travelling abroad?

For overseas renters we need to see - Passport, driving licence, flight itinerary & bill or bank statement with home address printed on.

What documents do I need when I picking up my car?

You will need your driving licence, your identification documents and your valid credit card. Your confirmation email details exactly what you need to bring on the day of rental.

Or if you're travelling overseas, we will need to see a valid passport, driving licence, flight itinerary & bill or bank statement with home address printed on.

When do I have to return the vehicle?

The vehicle should be returned to the agreed rental location at the latest date and time shown on the Rental Agreement document. The rental period will end when you return the vehicle to this location and hand the vehicle keys to the Rental Manager or their representative. We will allow a 60 minute tolerance period at the end of the rental. If you return the vehicle later than the grace period, you will be charged an additional day’s rental. Please always contact your rental location if you need to extend the booking or if you know you are going to be late for any reason. We will always try our best to accommodate your requirements.

Is fuel included in my rental rate?

Fuel is not included in your rental rate. We operate a same-to-same fuel policy; this means that the amount of fuel in the vehicle at pick-up will be noted on your rental agreement and you must return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel, otherwise, you may be charged for refuelling the missing quantity of fuel at the last AA published national average pump price plus our reasonable refuelling service charge for our having to refuel the vehicle. If you do not return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as in the vehicle at pick-up we will charge you for the missing quantity of fuel at the last AA published national average pump price plus our £5 service charge for having to refuel the vehicle.

We do not provide any refunds for fuel. Please keep the receipt for refuelling the vehicle to show us.

A recharging cost may apply with the hire of EV’s, please speak to your rental location to find out more.

What happens if I travel over the maximum permitted mileage?

If you travel over the maximum permitted mileage we will charge you a pence per mile excess mileage charge (as shown on your rental agreement) for each mile you travel over the maximum mileage shown on your rental agreement.

Is insurance included?

Yes. The VWFS Rent a Car's insurance is a comprehensive policy, covering damage to the rental vehicle, third party damage and fire and theft.

Unfortunately we do not allow retail customers to utilise their own insurance. However if you are a business customer please discuss this with the rental manager at the time of booking.

Glass is covered through our insurance, however it is subject to the excess applicable.

Tyres are not covered through our insurance.

If you would like to reduce your excess we do offer an enhanced collision damage waiver priced at £10 per rental day inclusive, to further reduce excess to the following: 25 and over £250.

How can I pay for my rental?

If you have booked on-line, the rental amount will be taken from your debit /credit card at the time of booking and the security deposit will be debited/secured from your debit/credit card when you collect your rental vehicle.

For non-online bookings, the security deposit and rental charges will be required at time of collection. We accept all major credit and debit cards, at this time we do not accept American Express. We also do not accept payment by cash or cheque.

Insurance and VAT are included in the quote.

Will there be a deposit taken when I pick up the car?

There will be a security deposit taken in addition to the total rental costs. If booking online, we take the rental charges only and then take a security deposit in the rental location on collection of the vehicle. Please speak with the Rental Manager to confirm the security deposit amount.

When paying for your rental, the amount will be taken in full and then refunded when the vehicle is returned. This process is linear across all card types.

Please note you will still be liable for the excess, should there be any additional charges on the return of the vehicle. These can be found on our Insurance page.
