Pulman Review: The SKODA Fabia

The guys at What Car? magazine know what they’re doing. They spend months pouring over cars, pitting one against the other. Manufacturers are delighted to collect some sort…any sort…of gong.

At ŠKODA however, things are different. They’re getting used to needing a trolley to deal with their trophy haul. This year was no different; ŠKODA romped home with a grand total of six awards which, let’s face it, is quite an achievement. In fact, it’s fair to say that the only area where they didn’t win anything was in the categories where they don’t actually have one of those type of cars.

Ever since it was launched, the ŠKODA Fabia, which is now into its third generation, has racked up dozens of awards. It doesn’t matter whether you go for the Fabia Hatch or the Fabia Estate, you’re still buying a winner.

Both cars have a fine reputation for being roomy, well equipped and reliable. That’s why they make for ideal family transportation. It doesn’t matter whether you are on a daily commute, on the school run, heading off to the shops or taking the family to the beach, there’s a ŠKODA Fabia to fit the bill. Oh, and talking of bills, a starting price of £10,500 represents cracking value and you’ll find that your Fabia holds onto its value like a limpet.

Both the Fabia Hatch and Fabia Estate follow similar lines when it comes to engine choices and trim.

You can choose from four 1.0 litre petrol engines developing between 59bhp and 108bhp… or there’s a pair of 1.4 litre diesel engines ranging from 89bhp to 103bhp.

Most of them can be teamed-up with an automatic gearbox and you can get the majority of those engines in the selection of  trims…S, S Plus, SE, SE-L and top of the range Monte Carlo which comes with everything. There are always some really tempting special edition models like the Colour Edition or Redline, although they’re reserved for the Fabia Hatch only.

When it comes to engines, it’s the usual choice……if you want a smooth engine and good economy…go for the 1.0 litre petrol units. Something like the mid-range 93bhp ŠKODA Fabia has a 0-60 time of just over 10 seconds…

If you prefer economy… the 1.4 litre diesels will be perfect?

Our favourite?….we like the most powerful 103bhp diesel version. It blends performance AND economy.

In terms of kit, every ŠKODA Fabia comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth, front electric windows, smart alloys and of course class-leading safety kit. Move up to our favourite, SE-L…and you also get air conditioning, daytime running lights, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a multifunction leather steering wheel with radio and telephone control, and Smart Link which seamlessly connects your phone and its apps to a colour touchscreen. There’s even an umbrella under the front passenger seat.

Don’t forget there’s a 3 year, 60,000 mile warranty…and of course the fantastic Pulman customer service comes as standard. Go on, find out why the guys at What Car? know that the ŠKODA Fabia is a winner.
