Retro Gets a Buzz

One of the most anticipated cars of the 21st Century will be arriving in the UK later this year and you’ll be able to find it at Pulman Volkswagen.

It’s the Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

When Volkswagen announced that they were reviving the much loved VW Microbus, everyone quite rightly got very excited. Many of you reading this will have been brought up either using one for holiday trips, hiring one or simply appreciating what a style icon it was. The original versions with split windscreens that flip open at the bottom, are now fetching serious money. The air cooled rear engine still sounds like nothing else.

Volkswagen of course aren’t new to doing retro. You can guarantee that it won’t be too long before we see the next version of the Beetle. Put money on it.

The ID.Buzz will available in two versions…either as the traditional 5-seater or as a van called the ID.Buzz Cargo. We’re concentrating here on the ID.Buzz car but, just for your information, the Cargo version will manage a couple of Euro Pallets in the back….so that gives you a rough estimate to its size and carrying capability.

The ID.Buzz is based on the ID.3 / ID.4. You’ll be seeing a lot of the platform which lies beneath these vehicles because Volkswagen will use it for various future models. So yes, the ID.Buzz is really a 5-seat car, but the big advantage is that because of the shape, you have acres of space. The boot is enormous. In other words, if you like the idea of the ID3 hatch or ID.4 crossover but would like a lot more room, then the ID Buzz is for you.

And of course nothing else looks like it.

You’re probably expecting that it will drive like a van…in other words it’ll sway a bit and won’t be much cop at cornering. Well, you’d be wrong because the one big advantage that any electric car has is that underneath the floorpan you will find a whacking great battery. Batteries are heavy. What this does is provide all electric cars with a very low centre of gravity which is good news when it comes to road holding and general road manners.

Range

Electric cars are getting better when it comes to distance, and they will also charge faster. Being realistic, the ID.Buzz will be looking at something in the region of 210 miles. To be honest, if you’ve got a family on board and are heading off on holiday, you’ll all probably need a break at some point. Head for a service area…plug in the ID.Buzz…find the loos… and go for a coffee.

Power (201bhp) goes to the rear wheels. You can expect a 0-60 time of just under 10 seconds…top speed is 90mph. If you use a rapid charger, a 30 minute charge will add around 140 miles to your journey. You can expect Volkswagen to offer the option of a bigger battery in future models.

The interior is funky but not over-the-top. In terms of kit, there are currently two models available…but they’re all well-equipped. The fascia is much the same as the ID.3 / ID.4 with a 5.3-inch screen in front of the driver and a 10-inch infotainment screen in the centre which controls just about everything including the satellite navigation. There’s a lot of glass around the cabin so no surprise that it’s quite heavily tinted (65%). There are parking sensors all-round, LED headlights, climate control, DAB radio, voice activation, 7 USB ports, rear-view camera and wireless charging for your phone. You get all of the essentials.

You can place an order for the ID.Buzz now with Pulman Volkswagen. We may as well tell you that there’s already a waiting list because the car has been incredibly popular…..but why not sign on the dotted line and give yourself something to look forward to.

You could buy a surfboard….learn how to avoid falling off it….and get ready to join the hip crowd in your Volkswagen ID.Buzz.
